Krzysztof Penderecki created his most famous work, “St. Luke Passion” (“Passio et Mors Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Secundum Lucam”), in the years 1963-1965. It was ordered by the German radio broadcasting institution Westdeutscher Rundfunk on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the Münster Cathedral, where the piece conducted by Henryk Czyż was premiered on 30th March 1966. The composer had also in mind the 1000th anniversary of Poland’s baptism in the same year. In Poland, St. Luke Passion was premiered on 22nd April 1999 in Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Kraków. Already in the year of its world premiere, “St. Luke Passion” was included in the programme of the Music Festival at Venice Biennale. In the years to follow, it was performed on numerous occasions throughout Europe, USA, South America, and Japan. Numerous recordings were made.
